I will answer your first question had a cousin who played in 94, Dominant team athletes everywhere 12-1 lost to Carlsbad on a fumblerooski. 95 was a strange season I believe that the team had lost a lot of players from the year before coupled with injuries and still almost beat Lovington but didn't make the playoffs because they ended up losing to Portales (At Bulldog Bowl) 96-98 talk about a juggernaut of an offense in 96 with a tough start on defense in 96 but got better as the season went along and beat a strong Socorro Warrior Team in Socorro. 97 had a real good team with strong leadership and a well tuned defense, only loss of the season was a 15-7 Loss to Roswell High which was rugged Roswell Team and than won state 34-31 over Silver. 98 was one of the best teams i've ever seen here in Artesia, 13-0. 1 point wins at Goddard and dominating all other teams even beating a big Las Cruces Bulldawg team (First Matchup between schools). Ruidoso was tough that year as was Lovington in which Artesia beat both in district and beating Ruidoso for State.

As I recall in 95, Paul Maupin was the QB but got hurt, can't remember at what point in the season and Josh Whitmire filled in for him. I was a soph, if I recall right there was some struggles on and off the field that year.

Champions can’t be won without a good defense. Jimmy Hamilton and Victor D. Rodriguez were on the 96, 97 if Im not mistaken.

NOONDOG22 I COULDNT AGREE WITH YOU MORE ON THAT, GREAT EXAMPLE OF WHAT JUST HAPPENED THIS YEAR (GREAT DEFENSE)
COPIED THIS FROM THE ARCHIVE: They won the title in 1992, won the title again in 1993, and were again loaded heading into the 1994 season. The Bulldogs extended their winning streak to eight games to open the year with a (34-2) win over Ruidoso in the opener. They then would push the winning streak to over 10 with wins over Hobbs, Roswell High, and Goddard. Looked unbeatable once again, the Eddy County Rivalry Game paired the Bulldogs against rival Carlsbad and as we've seen the past the Cavemen somehow figured out how to stop Artesia in a (21-17) thrilling game. Though the rivalry game lost stung, the Bulldogs kept to their winning ways after week five loss. They beat Ruidoso in the play-offs (38-0), beat Bloomfield (36-8) in the semifinals, and beat the Brian Urlacher led Lovington (35-21) in the title game.
The 97 season started 2-0 and then lost to Roswell High (15-7). They then one of the all-time greatest Goddard teams in a thriller (14-13) and that game seemed to set the tempo for the rest of the year. After that game Artesia rolled through teams; they beat Onate (50-6), beat Cobre (42-0), beat Lovington (20-8), and beat Portales (39-0), beat Tucumcari (45-0), beat Ruidoso (45-20), and beat Silver City in the title game (34-31). They won the title the following year also against Ruidoso.

1999: My brother played on this team, very tough team indeed Mark Joseph was the quarterback, offensive line was completely new and again had a tough schedule. Started out beating Robertson and then beating a big Hobbs team then losing to roswell high (35-29) at the wool bowl then beating a stacked Goddard team here at the bowl in the rain game (19-17) they would lose to Carlsbad and las cruces. They would win out and play St.Pius here for state and it was about 20 degrees here with wind chill about 10 degrees ended up losing 22-12. I feel like this team was somewhat forgotten. But they did well with what they had considering 98 had a lot of talent.

1990 team had 3 kids who grew up in Dog system through JR High and played for different schools. QB at Roswell High who was 1st team All District, Mario Sategna the best athlete in NM and on Bloomfield's State runner-up team and Michael Allen 2 Time 1st team All State and Honorable Mention All American his SR year and Captain of Lovington's 13-0 State Championship team. imagine if the Dogs had these 3 kids

1991 Goddard QB was Danny Vigil......don't remember much about his passing ability, but he could beat you with his legs like nobody I had ever seen.....like miniature version of Michael Vick or Vince Young. I remember in '91 we beat them during regular season district play by just a point or 2 in triple OT, one of the most exciting Bulldog football games I ever saw. THEN, they came to the Bowl for the state championship game a few week later and beat us 28-14. Vigil could NOT be stopped! I think Vigil might have went on to play juco ball for NMMI, but not sure.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Tim Foley. He was one of the best if not the best athlete I've seen from the 90's. Didn't realize the 2000s were that dominate either, 5 state championships. A good team that didn't win it all that I remember was the 2002 team. I think they were undefeated until the playoffs.

Looking back there’s a lot of underrated players in the Artesia program, what are some players that were integral that we don’t hear about as often?

I CAN SEE TONS AND TONS OF TALENTED PLAYERS THAT HAVE HAD TREMENDOUS SEASONS FOR ARTESIA BUT NEVER GOT THE OPPORTUNITY TO FURTHER THEIR PLAY IN COLLEGE BECAUSE OF BEING UNDERSIZED OR BEING FROM NM AND NOT RECRUITED. THESE ARTESIA BOYS MAYBE UNDERSIZED BUT THE HEART THAT THEY PLAY WITH IS BIGGER.

A name I haven't heard in a LONG time.... You are correct. Danny Vigil IMO was one of the best QB I'd ever seen. Pretty good pitcher too. Won state his senior season in BOTH football and baseball. We ran into him the first round of the playoffs in football in 91. Dude could sling the rock and well as he could run.
