Please pray for Kayci Houghtaling, she is the daughter of Ty and Jennifer, she is also a girl that was in my son's 1st grade class.
This is the details I know from an email I received.
Kayci needs your prayers! She is in intensive care at Covenant Children’s Hospital; her doctors think the virus settled in/attacked her heart. Her heart is barely pumping; her doctors were amazed that she made it to Lubbock. But our God is bigger than any virus! Please continue to pray. There is nothing they can do except keep her heart going until the virus runs its course; there is no medication
The last email I got said she was being air lifted to Houston this morning. I heard she may need a heart transplant, either way this little girl needs your prayers.
If anyone has any further information let us know and I will too.
Services for Kayci will be at 2pm friday Dec. 9th at the high school auditorium.

Kayci was airlifted to the Childrens Hospital of Texas in downtown Houston this afternoon. Jennifer was able to fly with her and Ty caught a flight out of Lubbock. They are there now with a team of specialists. Kayci is a strong and vibrant little girl that I believe will fight this virus off and be back home with us soon. Thank you for your continued prayers. If you would like to be on my prayer chain text list you can text your name and number to 575-308-3146 and I will add you to my list.

Doctors these days are miracle workers, and we all know what GOD can do. Thoughts and prayers are with Kayci and her family at this time.

Here is the latest entry from her Caring Bridge journal page.
Wednesday, August 17, 2011 8:09 PM, MDT
Good day! Kayci slept pretty well, although she asked Ty to load her up in the pickup and take her home. She really misses home. She misses her friends, her Church, and interestingly enough water fountains. Apparently many heart failure patients develop an unbelievable thirst. She is restricted to 1200 ml of fluid a day. Unfortunately she would like to drink anything until her little belly would burst. This powerful craving for something to drink has been a great big obstacle to her sense of security. Her heart continually leaks fluid, and when that fluid accumulates it causes all types of problems, thus she is restricted. She is so thirsty but she just can't have what she wants. Self discipline for a 7 year old can be challenging. Today she was more accepting of her situation. She moved around the floor, and played a game of monopoly with "Bam Maw" and Jennifer. Hoping for another good day tomorrow.
Keep those prayers going for little Kayci.

Kaci is enrolled in the same class as my son again this year, her empty desk is right next to his. Really puts things in perspective for me. I know her road to recovery will be long and difficult but I believe she will get through it and be back home and at school and living the life of a normal child.

Latest Journal Entry.
It was a good run. Kayci has been moved back to ICU. Her labs were too dangerous for her continued treatment as it was. She has been put on a continuous IV diuretic to try and level her kidney fluid output. She has also seen her continuous heart treatment IV increased. Each change is in an effort to extend her stability until she can get a new heart. It has not been a great day, but one that we had anticipated. I have stated it before, but I am going to say it again; with her heart function at the level it is, we have been tremendously blessed by God to have the days of stability that we have had. We praise God for our Kayci, knowing that His will be done in her life. Everyday brings us closer to her renewed strength and health.

I've heard kayci will have a berlin heart installed to keep her going until a donor heart is available. www.childrensmemorial.org/depts/heartcenter/berlin-heart.aspxThis is almost like Iron Man type stuff, an external device that keeps you alive, which is amazing but also lets you know the severity of the situation. Read that link I posted if you want to learn more about it. My prayers are with her. Their will also be a gathering at 8pm tonight at Taylor Tumbling to have prayer for Kayci.

This was posted from Jennifer Taylor on Facebook a short while ago.
Update on Kayci Houghtaling: Just talked to Jennifer Needham Houghtaling's mom and dad. Kayci is stable on a heart/lung bypass machine. She is going to receive a Berlin Heart (look up for more info) in the morning at about 8:00 Texas time. This is something that has been a possibility over the last serveral months and will simply serve as a "bridge" until Kayci receives her new heart. If a heart were to come available before morning, she would be eligible to receive it. If not, she will go off of the transplant list for a couple of days, while she is recovering from the procedure, and then will return to the list at her current placement. She is expected to feel better than ever in the meantime. Please continue to pray and thank God for all of the miracles she has received and for those that still await her!!!

From the Journal not long ago.
The Berlin heart is operational and working well. However, the right side has not fully responded the way the Doctors would like. They have decided to place a temporary right ventricular assist device (RVAD) for extra support. Kayci's heart has been so strained for so long that it is having difficulty accepting the new pressures caused by an efficient pump on the left side. This RVAD will be reevaluated in 48 hours to determine if her right side has been given enough help to recover on it's own. If it does not shrink in size and become stronger, then it will be necessary to add a permanent Berlin heart on the right side. Kayci will remain unconscious for another couple of days at least, but should remain very stable. I will update at the end of the surgery when we have the doctors assurance that she is stable and ready to start healing.
