I went to the game in Norman tonight and just got back to my folks' place in Lawton about 20 minutes ago. Unofficially, Landry was 35-for-47 for 375 yards. He was so much sharper tonight than he was a year ago against Utah State. Tulsa was a decent opponent - they had most of their skill guys back from a team that went 10-3 and won a bowl game (at Hawaii) as a road team). Here's the Tulsa World's early game story. I went to their site to see their take on everything, especially since they're usually not a bunch of Sooner homers: Whaley, OU run past Tulsa OU's Dominique Whaley scores a touchdown against TU on Saturday. Whaley, a walk-on, rushed for 131 yards and four touchdowns in his Sooner debut. STEPHEN PINGRY/Tulsa World By JOHN HOOVER World Sports Writer Published: 9/3/2011 10:45 PM Last Modified: 9/3/2011 10:45 PM NORMAN — Dominique Whaley’s first football game in three years seemed at times surreal. Whaley, a walk-on running back who doesn’t even have a mug shot in the media guide, rushed for 131 yards and four touchdowns as the No. 1-ranked Oklahoma Sooners opened the season with a dominating 47-14 victory over Tulsa. A Memorial Stadium crowd of 85,260 — hungry for football after an offseason in which the Sooners have been a trendy if not consensus choice as college football’s top team since beating up on Connecticut in the Fiesta Bowl — was no doubt impressed by their team, but blown away by Whaley. Whaley last played in 2008 at Langston. He sat out 2009, walked-on in 2010 and on Saturday night became a household name in Sooner Nation. He scored three touchdowns in the first half, busted through four tacklers for a 32-yard TD in the third quarter and added a 35-yard outburst in the fourth quarter. It was OU’s 75th consecutive sellout and 37th straight victory at home. Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones completed 35-of-47 passes for 375 yards and a touchdown before giving way to backup Drew Allen midway through the third quarter. OU receiver Ryan Broyles caught 14 passes for 158 yards and a 7-yard TD from Jones. Broyles’ highlight was a 50-yard bomb in the first quarter. Trey Franks caught seven passes for 74 yards as Jones’ second option (wideout Kenny Stills was suspended following a January DUI arrest; OU also missed defensive tackle Stacy McGee after a February marijuana citation.) The Sooners piled up 663 yards total offense, while Tulsa popped three long plays and finished with 400. Oklahoma’s easy night ruined Bill Blankenship’s debut as the Golden Hurricane’s head coach. Tulsa played without star cornerback John Flanders (declared academically ineligible last week) and all-purpose ace Damaris Johnson (suspended last week after an embezzlement arrest). Willie Carter led TU with five catches for 135 yards, including a 69-yard catch-and-run. Bryan Burnham scored TU’s first TD when G.J. Kinne beat a blitz and found Burnham for a 56-yard score. Trey Watts, son of former OU quarterback J.C. Watts, scored the Golden Hurricane’s second touchdown on a 24-yard reception. Watts also led TU with 47 yards on 10 rushes. The Sooners played with a heavy heart in their first game after senior linebacker Austin Box died of a drug overdose last May. Sophomore Tom Wort, who replaced Box in the middle of OU’s defense, wore Box’s No. 12 jersey. After an open date next Saturday, the Sooners take their No. 1 ranking to No. 6 Florida State in two weeks. Based on rankings, it’s been billed as the biggest non-conference game of the Bob Stoops era. Very nice article by Brienne Green in the Artesia Daily Press Friday. Part 2 will appear in Sunday's paper. You can see it at ArtesiaNews.com, but I have also uploaded it here (I hope that's okay). If part 2 is up, could you post the link? I'm sure that'll be a good read as well.

Postgame notes, from soonersports.com:
Individual Notes
Landry Jones • Landry Jones moved up to No. 2 on OU's all-time career passing yards list with 8,291. Jones passed Jason White at 7,922 with an 8-yard pass to Brennan Clay on the first play of the game.
• With 375 passing yards tonight, Jones is just the second Sooner to throw for 8,000 yards in a career with 8,291. Sam Bradford holds the all-time record with 8,403 career passing yards.
• Jones tied the school record for 300-plus yard passing games in a career at 14, previously set by both Sam Bradford and Josh Heupel.
• With his 35 completions, Jones became the only Sooner quarterback to have 700 career completions. Jones entered the game with 666 and now has 701. Tonight was Jones' fourth-most completions in a game. His best was 37 against Oklahoma State in 2010.

That's just amazing nmsooner, stats wise he should be the best QB that's played at OU. Imagine if he stays 1 more year, the bar will be set pretty high for those records.
Can't wait for the Florida State Game.

A board member on the OU Hoops site (someone with the user name Kimard) posted this link to a story on Landry's fiancee, Whitney Hand. I thought folks would find this interesting: issuu.com/twentysomethingmaga.../september2011To get to the article: 1. Click the cover of the magazine, it will then become full-screen. 2. At the bottom you'll see some little lines that "light-up" when your mouse goes over them. 3. Click on the '40-59' button. Her article begins on page 53 and ends on page 55.

FWIW, there is a nice AP story on Landry in today's Albuquerque Journal. I guess the guy who only wants MMA and fantasy football covered must have been sick last night when they did the page layout.

Big Game Today msn.foxsports.com/collegefootball/page/College-football-Fearless-Predictions-Week-3-091511No. 1 Oklahoma (1-0) at No. 5 Florida State (2-0) Saturday, 8 p.m. ET Line: Oklahoma -3.5 It's not too insanely over-the-top to suggest that this could be one of the biggest games for the future of college football. Florida State appears to be on the verge of being really good again, with head coach Jimbo Fisher putting together some tremendous recruiting classes and coming off a strong building-block season. With all the expansion talk and all the rumors and speculation about various conference realignment scenarios, Florida State is one of the key parts to the overall puzzle, and if it can knock off No. 1 Oklahoma and be in the national title chase, it will prove that the program really might be back to form. It's all about timing, and the school's bargaining position would be greatly enhanced with what would be the biggest win since beating Virginia Tech for the 2005 ACC title. For OU, this is its chance to make its own statement of dominance. The Pac-12 already wants the Sooners, but a win – remember, it's all about timing and it’s all about pumping up the images of the programs – would do even more for bragging rights and positioning. Of course, all the off-the-field aspects are just about the speculation. The fact is that the winner of this game will control its own destiny for the national championship. OU is already in a top-two spot and will play for it all by winning out, whereas Florida State would almost certainly move into the top two with a win and a 13-0 season. The Sooners have had two weeks off to prepare, and they get Missouri to kick off the Big 12 season next week, while Florida State blew away ULM and Charleston Southern by a combined score of 98-10 and starts out a three-game road trip next week at Clemson. OU is 5-1 in the series with three of the wins coming in classic Orange Bowls, and the lone loss coming in the 1965 Gator Bowl. Why Oklahoma might win: The Florida State pass protection has been a bit spotty over the first two games. Part of that is because the line is trying to protect a mobile quarterback in E.J. Manuel, and part it is because the line hasn't been that strong. The running game wasn't able to do much against ULM and Charleston Southern, getting stuffed for 92 yards by the Warhawks in the season opener, and the hope is for the front five to be fully jelled and ready after two shaky weeks. OU's defensive front is nasty in the interior and fast on the outside, and if the FSU line has to prove it can hold its own better than it did early on. The bigger problem for FSU could be turnover margin; the Noles can't win if they don’t at least play the Sooners to even there. Why Florida State might win: The OU back seven is still suspect. The secondary gave up 271 yards in the opener against Tulsa, and while most of those game in comeback mode, the chances were there for big plays. The depleted linebacking corps is still good despite the death of Austin Box and the injury to Travis Lewis, but it gave up a few decent runs to the Golden Hurricane and missed a few stops. FSU has to play this game fast, fast, fast and it has to get its skill players on the move at the OU linebackers. Everyone on the Sooner defense can run, but the safeties are just okay, and the chances will be there for Manuel to connect on the deep ball if he gets time to work. He'll have to be patient, but if he can hit the open man, he'll be able to nail OU on the post pattern for a few home runs. What to watch for: Is Manuel ready for the big stage, and does FSU have the firepower to keep up in a shootout? One of the nation's top recruits of 2008, Manuel is a 6-5, 234-pound playmaker with a unique array of physical skills, but he has yet to show he can put up big numbers in a really big game. He was good against South Carolina in the bowl win, completing 11-of-15 passes, but he only threw for 84 yards and a touchdown. Now after throwing for 581 yards and six touchdowns with two picks in his first two games, he has to make every right decision, and he has to take advantage of every opportunity while keeping the mistakes to a minimum. This game is on him, and if he doesn't play well, and if he has problems turning the ball over, FSU can't win. Prediction:Florida State 34, Oklahoma 31

By the way, local FM station 101.7 in Albuquerque included a segment with Kole McKamey yesterday. He basically said Landry "is a total stud" and was one of those kids growing up who stood out and was driven to be something special as an athlete. And, McKamey spoke so highly of Landry's family as well.
McKamey also talked about how great it is that Artesia has gotten behind Landry, and he mentioned how it was great to have that kid of support when he played in college at UNM.
BTW, given what will occur in Albuquerque in a few hours, he also mentioned that he was pleased to see lots of Lobo flags around town when he played for UNM. I'm sure it's killing him to see what's become of that program he was in at UNM, in such a short time, but he didn't say anything about that.

I only got to see half the game due to my kids soccer game.
Looks like the OU Defense shined in this one, and Landry came threw with a clutch throw in the 4th when the game was on the line.
Landry Jones QB
18-27, 198 yds 1 TD, 2 INTs 5 Rush, -10 yd, 1 TD
Jones also becomes the career leader in passing yards at OU.

A little too close for comfort, IMHO! I would have preferred it be like last year, LOL! Looked like a really rough game to me. Of course I am pretty much a wuss, but still it seemed extra hard hitting. Hope all heal up well. WooHoo!

From soonersports.com:
Landry Jones • Landry Jones became Oklahoma's all-time passing leader as he finished with 199 yards Saturday night to total 8,490 career yards. Jones needed just 113 yards to eclipse the previous record of 8,403 yards set by Sam Bradford (2007-09).

Does anyone know how many games he has played, compared to the others? I am guessing he has only started about 20? He needs 1 more 300 yard game to be on top in that category, he is tied with Heupel now. Maybe nmsooner can find all the records and let us know how close he is to all of them, just don't want him to break interception record! LOL

I always thought Aggie (NMSU) fans were bad, but Sooner message board fans are real doom and gloom guys. I can't believe how many rushed to condemn Landry after his picks on Saturday. Heck, the second one was as good as a punt in my book. Anyway. All the naysayers ... Landry's OK but not top tier, not deserving of Heisman consideration, never be as good as his predecessors, just a system QB, no way he can lead OK to the NC game. I know, I know, they're just ignorant posters but I don't take criticism well, LOL! If I was playing I would have to never read anything written, or I would have my feelings hurt all the time.
WOW! They should take a couple of chill pills. For crying out loud, it's only the 2nd game of the season and he was playing not only on the road but in an extremely hostile environment vs a really good defense. Geez, they should try being a NMSU fan for a while ...
Anyway, I think the fact he was able to come back and make the clutch throws are very telling. Some games the offense may do the heavy lifting and sometimes, like vs. FSU, the defense has to.
Okay, enough of my soapbox for now.

People get so emotional at the time. But, I am guessing the board you saw the critcism on isn't one that I visit. However, it is funny when the weirdos are (often) proven wrong about Landry and other players.
