I'm sure he is gone, should be gone on just his football record alone.
The good thing is maybe with these incidents they can get out that buyout clause to get rid of him and owe him nothing. Well see

Mike Locksley has been fired!!! According to CBS...... dennis-dodd.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6270202/32255285Now the healing process can begin! Even if UNM brings in Mike Leach...Jimmy Johnson...Don Shula...or even Vince Lombardi reincarnated, the Lobos will STILL only win a maximum of 1 game this year. But that is not what is important. What IS important is that UNM football turned the corner today with this action! Things only get better from hear on out. Even if the win/loss column does not improve immediately UNM is still better off for this move. They will begin to reap the benefits within the next year or two. Maybe not next year, but things will slowly begin to improve.

That explains the rise in temperature yesterday afternoon. A collective sigh from thousands of UNM Lobo fans at the announcement of his firing.
Don't get your hopes up for a big name coach at UNM. It will most likely be someone wanting to make a name, instead of a name wanting to make something.

In my humble opinion this is 2 years overdue. When your having boxing matches with your assistant coaches it shows a lack of leadership. As for the Lobo's I would love to see Mike Leach there. I would rather have 3 years with a Coach like Leach than 10 years of Rocky Long.
At least Dennis Franchione got the State excited about UNM Football. He signed Urlacher and went to a bowl game for the first time in 40 years. He moved on after 5 years to TCU but it was an exciting ride.
Dallas Bollema, Bubba Forrest and other NM Recruits deserve better. UNM is a basketball town but with the right Coach UNM Football could be an exciting program to watch again.

Remember Bronco Mendenhall? His defense was exciting to watch. Apparently the heats on him at BYU right now. Maybe he would be open to a return to NM.
Who knows what could happen, either way I don't think it can get any worse.

I never liked firing a coach during the season. IMO he was doomed from the start. Todd Christiansen of the Mtn said Rocky quit and left the cupboard bare. Also the lack of full scholorships hurt. I say Rocky knew what was coming, looked at the schedule and got out at a good time.

One online article I read today declared "This was the worst hire in BCS history" Meaning UNM's hiring of Locksley. I believe the AD should be fired as well for making such a horrible hire. Possibly even the president of UNM as well for letting this guy embarass the school is so many ways. HUMMMMM..... Two sexual harassment claims, punches an assistant, spotted out drinking with players on several occasions, not to mention a 2-26 record....
There had to of been hundreds of small college and or high school coaching candidates that could have done a better job that Locksley. Hopefully Mike Leach gets the call and accepts the job.

If there is a coach out there looking for a challenge, UNM is the place for them. I hope someone is up to the task.

If there is a coach out there looking for a challenge, UNM is the place for them. I hope someone is up to the task. Unfortunately, one thing that's made Lobo football a BIG challenge over the years is the fickle nature of the local "sports fan" base. Some of them act like they have to choose between watching football on Saturdays here or watching football on TV on Sundays. It makes too much sense to me to do both. Even when UNM went 10-1 in 1982, they couldn't draw more than 24,000 for their home finale, and it cost them a bowl game. Franchione and Long both fielded a few decent teams, and people bailed on them at the first chance they had. These are the same people who call talk radio and brag about how "loyal" they are to some NFL team (again, why not have loyalty to the hometown team also?). Some folks are quick to blame us evil "BCS transplants," but there are far more lifelong locals here who never go to games and who also call themselves "football fans." If you could get half of the "too cool to be a Lobo" crowd that brawls in bars over NFL games, to even give it a chance, they'd fill the stadium. I also know UNM staffers who are big NFL fans and UNM alumni, and they wouldn't dream of lowering themselves to come watch even a decent Lobo team play in person, at cut-rate prices no less for staff (I get half-price season tickets). I also believe that UNM needs to attempt more statewide alumni outreach. It got better when Fran and Rocky signed kids from the eastern side of the state, and Rocky was especially good at raiding Cruces. Somehow they need to find a way to make it a statewide event like it is in Oklahoma, and even other smaller places like Wyoming.

UNM ought to go after Mike Leach. That would bring some fans to the games.

Paul Krebs needs to keep his job and so he needs fans to go to the games, 16,000 fans just don't cut it.

I don't doubt UNM can't afford him but what is he doing now? He does not appear to be working anywhere. Is he one of the unemployed Obama is worried about?

Is he one of the unemployed Obama is worried about? ;D He's doin' a talk show on Sirius(sp?) in Florida. He doesn't need the money, but I could see him takin' the UNM job just to try to beat Tech to spite the administration there.

I could say alot of political things here especially with the Obama remark but this is a sports forum I enjoy and I am a bulldog fan. The politics I will leave to another board I'm into. You are right fow, Coach Leach is probably earning more money than a bunch of other college coaches just selling his book. He has another book coming out soon. He has a talk radio show in Florida and he is on speaking tours and football clinics. So, he doesn't need the money. He was interview on 610 "the animal" two day ago and I listened to it this 45 minute interview. He does show some interest in the UNM position but who knows who will take this job? I hope he does the job just to see him beat and (I quote BGP) "Tuberville from Gooberville" and the Three Stooges from the TTU administration who gave him a raw deal. Incidentally buy coach Leach's book, it makes for interesting reading.
