For the next 45 minutes, they saw just how dynamic the Bulldogs looked when they have their feet jammed on the gas pedal.
After a woeful start on Saturday, the Bulldogs changed into juggernaut mode in the final three periods of the Heart of Texas Bowl, scorching the New Mexico Military Institute, 40-24.
The Bulldogs compiled 611 yards of total offense over the last three quarters and outscored the Broncos 37-10 en route to their third straight double-digit win season. Navarro won its third straight bowl game under Coach Nick Bobeck to finish 10-2.
“It took us a while to get going, but once me made some adjustments, we played really well,” Bobeck said of the rain-soaked afternoon. “It took a while, coaches included, to get everything on the right track. The defense made some key adjustments and the offense finally started to make plays.”
The game was filled with several outstanding individual performances for the Bulldogs.
HOT Bowl Most Valuable Player Quarterback Adrian Nelson completed 25 of 35 passes for 433 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite receiver, as always, was Marquez Clark, who caught 13 passes for 186 yards but was held out of the end zone for the first time in six games.
The quietest offensive star was Johnny Haynes. The freshman receiver-turned-running back gained 214 yards on the ground thanks to runs of 65, 50 and 51 yards.
“He wasn’t recruited to play running back but he moved over in the middle of the year when we needed him,” Bobeck said. “Johnny has a natural knack of finding holes and then engaging whoever is in front of him.”
Within a four-minute span in the third period, Navarro turned a deficit into a runaway thanks to the combo of Nelson and Johnson.
Nelson completed his first seven passes of the first half for almost 200 yards, setting up one touchdown with a 51-yarder to Marquez Clark and then firing a 74-yard strike to Johnson for a 33-24 lead with 6:27 left in the third period.
