Sad news but I thought I would mention it on here. Jose Martinez passed away early this morning. Jose was a member of the 97 and 98 undefeated Bulldog football teams, in my words he was the Larry Allen for you Dallas fans of the Artesia Bulldogs. He was massive and strong, and was quick for his size, as far as I know he still might hold all the weight lifting records for the football program. He went on to play football at Eastern NM and played some semi-pro football after that. He was a legend on the field and one of the funniest guys off the field. He will be missed. www.goeasternathletics.com/news/2011/12/14/FB_1214111453.aspx

Jose was 6 ft 2 in......335 lbs (according to the 1998 Bulldog game program). And not an ounce of fat on him!!! Very quick! The 2005 Dallas Cowboy roster shows Larry Allen at 6 ft 3 in......325 lbs. So Jose was 10 lbs heavier. But Larry Allen was an inch taller. And we all know that 1 inch in height is meaningless when talking about leverage, especially where linemen are concerned. Jose was also every bit as strong as Larry Allen, and most likely even stronger. And probably just as quick! If Jose Martinez had been from Texas, Alabama, Georgia or Florida, he would have been recruited just as heavily as Larry Allen was. Having watched him play, there is absolutely NO doubt in my mind that if he had fallen into the right program with the right coaches he would have been every bit as successful as Larry Allen. That being said, I am very sad to hear of Jose's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Services will be Tuesday at 9:30 at our lady of grace.
With respect to the past great ones at the o-line spot I've never seen play, if you take 5 guys to make an offensive line from all the years of Artesia football, Jose is one of those 5 guys and he might be the 1st one you would take, I think he was that good. Jose was all business once he hit the field, total opposite off the field, most laid back guy there was, never took anything too seriously, always cracking jokes, to me he was a comedic genius, he could turn anything into a joke.

Words cant express the value of the person who left us. I had the opportunity to play with Jose for two years. My Junior year his senior year, i worked out with him, Mark West, and Micheal Arrajo(sorry on the spelling). I wasnt half as strong as these guys, but Jose pushed me every day to get better. I believe he lived that way also. He was never satisfied. He always looked for improvment. I went to ENMU and hung out with Jose. This guy could light up the side of a mountain in a snow storm. Thats how much personality he had. He cared about everyone. I dont think he ever really had an enemy unless they were across the ball from him....and by the end of the game, there was nothing but respect on how he conducted himself and how he played the game. I compare the bulldog football team to a fraternity, if you will. There is so much sweat, blood and tears shed for the same cause. I am proud to call him my brother! The bulldogs could use more guys like Jose. He helped the tradition here in Artesia to where it is today.
At ease my Brother....until we meet again in eternity!

I second Randall's comments about Jose's comedic talent. Definitely one of the funniest guys I've ever been around. I remember one day during Track & Field practice, he made up a song about a guy Chester he knew and it was hilarious. He was always there to lift your spirits and help you remember what's important in life
