I'll probably be there in a little over five weeks. My dad is coming all the way from southwestern Oklahoma to participate in the cattle drive that's part of the Lea County centennial. The drive is going from near Jal to Carlsbad, starting Wednesday, May 8.
Of course, the obvious answer is to go to the Caverns. Might do that again (did in '72 when my folks took me and my brother there when I was an 8th grader).
If I don't want to do the Caverns tour, I'm thinking about just driving to the edge of the Guadalupe Mountains on U.S. 62/180 on the Texas side. Might also go to Sitting Bull Falls, but I don't know how long that takes. Another option would be going down to Red Bluff, since I've never been that direction from Carlsbad.

I would highly recommend the Caverns. I take the family there every 5 years or so, and it NEVER gets old. The constant 58 degrees in the dead of summer is nice! But then, I enjoy the cool temps of the caverns as much as anything else. When you come out from underground, that 95 degree temp really slaps you in the face........really makes you wish you were back down in the lunch room 750 ft below ground! The caverns is one of my favorite places. If I could go there every day, I would!
Red Bluff Lake is definitely not one of my favorite places. Been there probably 3 or 4 times in my 53 years. Last time was probably 15 years ago. Parents use to drag me there a lot when I was a kid. Red Bluff is barren, dry, sandy, and always 105 degrees. No shade! No trees! At least that's the way I remember it. Kind of like a lake on Mars.
Sitting Bull Falls.....I will leave that to somebody else. I haven't been there since 1981. The way I remember it was 1981 is because it was the year before the wife and I tied the knot.

Lots of interesting stuff to see in the Guadalupes. We go there a lot looking for old Native American campsites, etc. Never know when you might run across an old mescal pit, bedrock mortars, etc. The town of Seven Rivers was named that for a reason. Back in “the day” there were 6-7 rivers coming down out of the Guadalupes to flow into the Pecos River so lots of ancient and newer campsites were made around such good water resources. Also, Queen was once a stage stop on the Butterfield Stage. If you read westerns or have ever read Ma'am Jones of the Pecos or Mean as Hell there is lots of history around this part of the state. Remember Eddy County was part of Lincoln County at the time of the Chisum Ranch and the Lincoln County War so (especially up in the Guadalupes) it's likely at some point you will walk the same path as Billy the Kid, Apache raiders and Buffalo Soldiers.
Okay, I admit it, I am a SE NM history nut and you may be like my son and think I'm off the rails, but luckily DH agrees with me and we have lots of fun outings. If you have a good imagination you can almost picture the participants as you see the country. Also lots of caves up around the Guadalupes. Sitting Bull Falls boasts the most well-known ones. You just have to remember that the Jornada Mogollon people were around this area back in the 11th and 12th century and left plenty of artifacts and petroglyphs (sometimes on the ceilings of shallow caves). Before them there were other Paleo-Indian inhabitants and after them Apache and Comanche. Old Cavalry vs. Indian battle sites and even single graves where victims of Indian raids were buried where they fell, or horse and cattle thieves were buried after a good lynching or gunfight.
Whatever you do, please enjoy your visit. If you get too bored, you can always feed the squirrels and ducks along the river walk.

you can always drive thru town on 285 which will now take you like 30 minutes due to construction or take a detour thru the hood where you will be flashed gang signs and see meth heads smoking on their front porch. The whole town is a dump.

Seriously folks!?! This is nuts...someone asks a serious question of something to do and you take it there! I couldn't agree more! This is neither the time nor the place. Having said that................ Neither one of those establishments mentioned earlier is located in Artesia. They are both out in the county. EDDY County! Artesia does not permit businesses like that inside the city limits. Heck, one of them is almost halfway between Carlsbad and Artesia. CARLSBAD is the county seat. CARLSBAD is where the Eddy County Courthouse, and all of the Eddy County offices are located. Evidently, the good folks in Carlsbad had NO PROBLEMS with those types of establishments being located within THEIR county......AFTER Artesia had already said NO. Just setting the record straight. However, there is one good thing that I can say about the strip club that is located on the highway north of Carlsbad. It has really helped to beautify the streets of Carlsbad. It has taken a lot of the trash off of the Carlsbad streets, what with all the skanky Carlsbad chicks working at the club.

Back on topic..... What are good breakfast / lunch establishments in both Carlsbad and Artesia?

My favorite restaurant in Carlsbad is Larez (1524 S Canal). Great Mexican food. I'm a sucker for the Tostada Compuesta but they also have a buffet and everything else I’ve eaten there has been good. My favorite Mexican restaurants in Artesia are La Fiesta (816 S. 1st) and La Herradura (1901 N. Pine). Danny’s Place (902 S Canal) in Carlsbad has good BBQ ribs and Red Chimney (817 N Canal) is okay, too. We ate lunch out a lot when I was working there a few years ago but I usually deferred to the Carlsbad guys to pick the restaurant. I love the Huevos Rancheros from Chapz (1808 S 1st) in Artesia for breakfast. Never really ate breakfast in Carlsbad.

Sooner, maybe it wasn't a great idea to ask Artesia what's good in Cbad! Do you have a better appreciation of the mutual respect/hatred?

anyways back to the fight lol jk.
That's funny Jayster. I agree Cavemanj towns are kinda the same, with some differences but when its artesia vs carlsbad week it's on though. My dad worked in Carlsbad most of his life, let me tell you that would be a crap talking, mud slinging week.
One thing I envy about Carlsbad is their youth sports complex though, its top notch in my book, we've played there many times, wish we could fix Jaycee park up to that standard but anyways that's another topic.
As for restaurants didn't Lucy's on Canal street used to be one of the best Mexican food places in town? I haven't been there in several years but it was pretty good as I remember.

Trip's over and done with - and it included a brief stop in Artesia yesterday at the Stripes convenience store downtown. The only meals we had in Carlsbad were on Saturday - Lucy's for lunch and Chili's for dinner. Otherwise, it was free breakfast at the hotel and the trail ride's pre-paid Chuckwagon Dinner, out at the campsites (they had one on Wednesday night, then Thursday and Friday, before arriving at the Eddy County arena on Saturday east of Carlsbad). www.pitchforkcattle.com/Pitchfork_Cattle_Company/Events.html (this tells about the experience - and my dad had a blast; and was also featured in the Journal yesterday). The only full "free day" I had was Friday. Drove to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park and ate lunch at the rest area on 62/180 that looks like it's on the flank of El Capitan (mountain). I cut over to 285 and came back up through Malaga and Loving. Mainly what I did on Saturday, after we had our late lunch at Lucy's, was to let my dad unwind and rest. He was the oldest full-time rider in the cattle drive, and everyone just fawned over him for making it through the whole thing with no problems.
