WTF??? WOW! First I have heard of this! Why the heck are they ripping it out? It was beautiful! How come they are taking it out? I know you said they are putting in new turf but why? The turf was brand new. It was put in around 2004. I know it was 2004 because that is the year my son graduated from AHS. His senior year......no turf. Year after he graduated.....turf! I just can't understand why they are replacing it already

They are going in with the pro style astro turf! Talked to the man installing it and he said it was not correctly installed especially the drainage part. It is still in good shape but with all the sand and rubber, it is heavy! No, my yard will not be orange but if I could have got the orange and white checkerboard, my shop would have it all around it! LOL Crispy, my daughter graduated on the grass, I remember them having a big riot at the high school because they were going to make them graduate in auditorium or at Morris Field, kids went nuts! LOL

Ha Ha! My memory was on vacation when I made my previous post. I made a few errors. Rather than edit the other post I will just correct the details here. My son DID graduate in 2004 (AHS Class of '04), but the turf was installed the following year in 2005 right after graduation. My son was already at ENMU for his freshman year of college when the new turf went in.
My wife and I attended the graduation ceremony at Bulldog Bowl in 2005 even though our son had already graduated, because we knew a lot of the graduates. They were just one year younger than our son, and a lot of them were his friends. The REAL natural grass was still there during the graduation ceremony in '05. Everybody knew that they were holding off installing the turf until after graduation. They were supposed to start ripping out the sod just a few days after graduation in 2005 in preparation for installing the new artificial turf. The wife and I attended graduation even though our son was already away at college for his freshman year.
SO.........we were all down on the field right after the ceremony milling about, taking pictures, you know...like they always do. I was very aware of the upcoming situation with the turf, so I was reaching down and yanking huge handfuls of the REAL grass and was stuffing it into my pockets. The wife thought I was crazy! She kept asking me what the hell I was doing! Got home with all of my pants pockets and both shirt pockets stuffed with as much of the Bulldog Bowl REAL grass as they would hold. I put ALL of it into a zip-lock sandwich bag and sealed it up real good with tape. As close to hermetically sealed as you can get. Before I sealed it up I wrote on a piece of paper......"natural grass from Bulldog Bowl 2005".......and I put the piece of paper in the bag with the grass.
I still have it! It is in an old shoe box on the top shelf of our bedroom closet. I just looked at it a few minutes ago! I may sell it on Ebay some day for a couple of grand, lol. Just kidding, it is NOT for sale! In all seriousness..........yes, I do have in my possession a bag full of the natural grass from The Bowl before they ripped it out. Even though it has dried out and turned brown, lol.

If it's orange I'm moving! You might get the U-Haul packed but it wouldn't make it outside city limits before the tires were shot out lol. Like BGP said the drainage on the old field was bad, bigdog had a picture a few years ago of the bowl after it rained heavily for a day or two and you would just have standing puddles of water in certain areas of the field. It's a pro grade turf just like what was recently installed at the baseball/softball fields and soon to the soccer field. To me the baseball field turf just seems a lot smoother & softer than the old football turf. I remember my brother got a real bad like rug burn on the old astro turf, I don't think that will happen as much or as bad with this new type of turf.

We graduated at the auditorium in 1985 due to a storm. Did any of you other guys not get to graduate at the bowl?

We graduated at the auditorium in 1985 due to a storm. Did any of you other guys not get to graduate at the bowl? I don't know Mr. Pitch, I was fortunate to be able to "walk" at Bulldog Bowl in 1976. It would be interesting to see a list of those classes that did not get to graduate at The Bowl because of bad weather. Your class (1985) may be the only one. Would be interesting to see if there were any others.

Randall, isn't soccer field already done? Its green and has a Bulldog on NE side of field!
Crispy, they were going to start ripping the natural grass up BEFORE graduation, that is why all the seniors threw such a fit, they were not going to be able to graduate in the bowl. My daughter was a Sr. and she was literally bawling about it. I heard they were really raising hell in the commons area and can't remember who talked the installers in waiting until after graduation. It was a big mess anyway, they only had like a week before graduation and they should have known it would cause the uproar that it did. Now I remember they were going to hold graduation in the Pit!

Anybody know what the new endzones will be like? Are we going to stay with the orange and white checkerboard? I hope so.

They may have done the soccer field bgp, I haven't been out there in awhile.
BigDog thinks they might have a bulldog logo on the 50 yard line, not sure on the checkered end zone, heard it could be checkerboard again, or just orange or just green, I guess we will see.

They are making great progress. Ran by this morning and they were working on the 50 yard line Bullodog emblem. Go by and check it out. They should start putting down the rubber soon.
