Most of us OU alumni are completely embarrassed by them. They're almost angry with Landry for being good, after they wrote him off in 2009. My theory has always been that their big gripe with Landry is that he's "not Sam Bradford." And it also pains me to notice that others are holding his non-native (Oklahoman) status against him also.
I'll admit - it is rather comical to see them dig in their heels whenever he has a great game, like vs. Texas and K-State just last year. It was everyone else's work that made him look good.
But, that kind of attitude isn't limited to the lunatic fringe that wear OU crimson. Living in Albuquerque, it's almost astonishing that people marginalize many excellent former Lobo football and men's basketball players. And those critics will dig in their heels as bad or worse than the Landry-bashers do. For example, I once heard an idiot on local talk radio call a host named Andrew Paul and just ripped Kenny Thomas. The guy was SURE that Thomas wouldn't even get drafted in '99, much less in the first round (like he did), and he also insisted that Thomas didn't even deserve to start at UNM.
I just felt like posting that now, so people don't get too upset with our version of the lunatic fringe. Some people would rather be wrong and stick with their warped ideas of how things are, than admit that someone really did prove them wrong.

There's not much else he can do to sway those people except maybe win the heisman and a national title.
Sure sounds like landry has put in a lot of work this off season, I expect good things from him again this season. Hopefully he leaves OU with a bang, much like he did in Artesia.

Some people would rather be wrong and stick with their warped ideas of how things are, than admit that someone really did prove them wrong. You know, you just touched on something that has been a theory of mine for a while. And it never even occurred to me as a possibility...... UNTIL after the K-State game last year in which Landry broke Sam Bradford's single-game passing record with 505 yards. Landry also tossed 5 TD passes in that game. It was an absolutely PHENOMENAL performance. Immediately after that record setting performance there were OU "fans" on Landthieves.com who were just absolutely ripping into Landry and bashing him after that awesome performance. Yeah I know, Landthieves is "out there" but it is my favorite OU board at the time. There was nothing to complain about concerning Landry's performance in that game, yet these people were bound and determined to find something to complain about. Receivers bailing him out by catching bad passes, etc etc etc. That it when I finally put 2 and 2 together and came to the conclusion that a lot of OU fans despise him, get this...........BECAUSE HE IS NOT FROM OKLAHOMA!!! OU has had a long list of home grown QBs from Oklahoma, Jason White and Sam Bradford among them. Heck, Bradford is from right there in OKC!!! The hometown darling! And then the kid from out-of-state just whips into town and takes a lot of his records. Resentment? You bet there is resentment! Everybody knows how much Landry is loved and admired in this town. He was born and raised here! We watched him play at Zia and Park! Probably the closest thing to a living legend that we have around here. Imagine if in a couple of years some stud QB from Texas just whips into town to finish his senior year. Imagine that kid (an outsider) has a record setting year at QB for the Bulldogs and takes all of Landry's AHS passing records. Do you think there would be resentment among many of the Bulldog faithful? You're darn right there would be resentment!!! And if they told you they didn't resent it they would be lying to you. Heck, I would probably even resent it a little myself. If you want to test out this theory, just go to Landthieves or any other OU board and make a post saying that you thing Landry is the best QB in OU history. You will be bludgeoned to death in short order! And those arguing against you and calling you a moron are not necessarily arguing against Landry, but rather they are defending the hometown hero Sam Bradford and pride in their home state. That is my theory anyway.

Never been to the Landthieves site, but I feel your pain. And I'm from southern Oklahoma originally. A kid from my high school, Jermaine Gresham (now a Pro Bowl TE for Cincinnati) was even a teammate of Landry's for basically two years, although they never appeared in a game together due to redshirts.
Personally, I could care less where a kid's from, at OU, as long as he's good and represents the university well off the field. Our fan base has even feuded over two native Okies when I was a student - when J.C. Watts (Eufaula) started at QB over Kelly Phelps (OKC). Watts proved the coaches right by never losing a Big 8 game in his starting career, but that didn't stop some from being mad about it.
If you want to hear good things, check out KREF-AM (Norman) on the internet sometime. The main hosts, especially James Hale, think Landry is awesome. And two ex-players, Teddy Lehman and Dusty Dvorachek, were really hot about how Landry didn't even make preseason SECOND team All-Big 12 in Athlon's magazine. Dusty said he was going to buy the magazine until he heard that. They were both very vocal in support of Landry on their "drive-time" show.

Not only have the two ex-teammates, Lehman and Dvorachek stuck up for Landry lately on the air, but I also heard former OU QB Thomas Lott ('76-78 seasons) do the same this morning. Lott was a wishbone QB when I was in school (until my last year at OU, when J.C. Watts took over), but he also played halfback in the NFL for a few seasons. So Thomas does know a thing or two about NFL talent.

Isn't Landry getting married this weekend? I don't care what you say, if he's got the moxy to dress up in that clown outfit and throw out the first pitch in softball the way he did, he probably can shrug off a few bleacher creature comments. Guys a cut up. Probably why he's successful... don't take yourself too seriously.
