I recently lost my dog of 16 years, he was a blue heeler. A very stout dog in his day and pretty smart and healthy dog most all his life.
I'll probably look at getting another dog in the near future, just looking a different breeds of dogs. I've been looking at siberian husky, golden retriever, even thought about a bulldog lol, maybe I can teach him to fetch the kicking tee's. I hear Bulldogs can have health issues though, think that's why winston had to retire, don't believe he was too old either.
Anyways just wondering if someone on here had experience with those breeds or another dog that's probably medium size, and good around children. Would consider another blue heeler but afraid I might always compare him to the one I had, don't think I could find another one like that again.

If any of you remember my Bulldog Charlie, He was the best pet/Dog we have ever had. He died at 10 of throat cancer and it broke our hearts. He had the greatest personality and was one of a kind. They do have health issues and a short life span

I have been slobbered on many times by 'Charlie Hustle'. By the time I got thru wrestling around with Charlie, I had more of his coat on than he did! Wonderful dog. Have any of you guys ever sen a Boerboel? Wow, those are cool dogs. Really gentle 200lb dog.

It is a well known fact that the larger breeds have a shorter life span than the smaller breeds. Chihuahua, Dachshund, Pug, etc., often live to 18 years or longer. My sister just had her female Boxer put down a couple of weeks ago at 12 years of age. 10-12 years is about the norm for larger breeds like Boxers, Newfoundlands, Great Danes, etc. My sister's Boxer's name was Berkley. When I found out that she had to have Berkley put down (facebook) I called her to say I was sorry, and that 12 years seemed rather young for that kind of thing. My sister told me that the veterinarian assured her that 12 years was about right for a breed of that size.
Hope you find the right one Randall.

My Mom has German shepherds, they are great with kids, they are BIG though! I have a chihuahua, sheis the smartest and has the best personality I have ever seen in one of them. I think it just depends on how they are handled and loved on! Mine is worse than a kid. lol

I'm a big fan of Mastiffs... I've mainly owned English Mastiffs, but i recently bought my 1st South African Boerboel mastiff..... He looks like a Giant bulldog. He is a little over a year old and as Mr. pitch described above, a 200 lb. gentle giant. We named him King, which if you saw him goes with his look and personality.
The reason I go with these dogs is due to the way they are around kids. They are just wonderful with my 8 year old twins and 7 year old daughter. Very laid back and all they want is to be loved!! Yet very loyal and protective if necessary. I've never seen them become agressive toward 'friendlies' but i've seen them bow up to other dogs, snakes, and other unwelcome creatures in my yard. ( skunks, coyotes, etc...)
The downside is short life span. We have had 2 die before age 5 and my female is now close to 7 and she is not long for this world. Her name is Katie and she has been a wonderful friend to my family.

My li'l redhead and I have two deer chihuahua - terriers who were full of energy until today. Today they got spayed and nuetered and they are so calm and still out of it. They are sleeping, sleeping and sleeping....Today and tonight they will not be watch dogs. Once the anesthesia wears out they will return to normal. When they run they run like a deer, almost a jump run maybe that is why they are called deer chihuahuas? I really want a bulldog I just don't have the money to buy one for now...

My dog (Bernie) is kind of a mutt but when we take him in for grooming he is listed as a Sheltie. Last time I weighed him he was at 35 lbs, eats like a horse. If being good around kids is a big thing this is the breed, he is black and some white with a little brown mixed in. Also has some Aussie Shepherd in him, can jump a 5 foot wall easy!

Randall, get a mutt! They usually do make better pets, or pests! LOL If you want a mutt, I have one of those too! Part lab, and would be a GOOD bird dog if someone messed with him, he will fetch stuff out of the river when I take him.

lol good one godogs. Might not be a bad idea. I'm really into fish as well, I got 2 freshwater fish tanks, in March I started a saltwater fish tank. I've got some pretty cool fish in there, one is a foxface rabbit fish, he is bright yellow, he can turn almost black when he is spooked or frightened, his fins are venomous it's cool to see him flex them when its nervous, or just not sure of something, they come out like spikes almost. This isn't my fish but he looks just like it. With his fins spread out. Haven't been stung by him yet, hopefully I don't get stung, which they say compares to a bee sting but a little stronger. Very peaceful fish though, will pretty much let me feed him by hand. Still not sure on the type of dog I want, probably wait a few more months to get one.
