Curious to hear what some of you think on this. I think we all would agree Football is king.
What is the #2 sport in town, Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, Softball, Bowling, Tennis, Soccer, whatever else there is.

I guess that depends on what makes a sport #2. If it’s success….. recently Bowling and Softball are tough to beat. If it’s community attendance, then basketball is probably #2. Baseball has huge potential, they just can’t get over the hump. Soccer may never have much success, because the Abq private schools are literally on a different level.

Yeah I guess what other sport moves the needle in this town, from HS level on down to youth. Not necessarily success, but I think your response pretty spot on.
Girls maybe better with own separate category but we do share some sports soccer, basketball etc. I think girls youth softball is huge in Artesia and travel teams etc, which has feed the program with talent and titles. Volleyball not far off, just from what I see.

Softball is probably my number 2 sport 3 titles in a row and it should have been 4 in a row.

my list.
#1 Football #2 Baseball #3 Basketball #4 Soccer #5 Bowling, Tennis, etc.
Girls #1 Softball #2 Volleyball #3 Basketball
I think baseball and basketball are close to each other, dogwarden is right, basketball probably attended by more fans, maybe because it's indoors? team been successful too 3X district champs, our spring weather season is the absolute worst, wind and dirt, I think tomorrow is 35mph winds. Youth baseball is pretty big in town, kids playing little league and amount of travel teams. Youth basketball in town is decent with the amount of kids playing, but outside of that don't know many kids playing hoops outside that time.
just my opinion.

When I took over the Baseball Program in 1976 we had 25-30 kids out for baseball Varsity and JV. Artesia had only won 1-2 District Championships in history of school before that. When I left 8 years later we would have 50-60 kids out for baseball. We would draw huge crowds for our home games. Artesia continued to grow as a baseball power from that point on with great coaching through the years and kids who believe in the program. Just thing the Artesia Baseball Tournament started in 1976 and still continues to this day and is the longest running tournament in NM.

That’s some great history…., the Artesia tournament is a good one too. One of the better tournaments in the state. Baseball still draws a pretty good crowd- just not quite basketball size. Coach Ortiz has had some decent success with the program- I think they always get to at least the quarterfinals. Last year they made the semi’s and in 2019 made the finals. The private schools are just better right now. It’s tough to get over that hump. I think a HUGE downfall for baseball is that there is literally nothing offered in Artesia for 7th/8th graders. The youth league can’t fill enough players to make multiple teams, and the school offers nothing. The few that are able to play tournament baseball can continue to play some, but the vast majority take one to two years off- than come back in 9th grade. That puts the Bulldogs behind the Albuquerque private schools. Who continue to play, and even have alternative options like ABA and Next Level baseball academies for year round practice/lessons- supervised by professional coaches.

Mike, whatever happened to the "pumpkin suit" baseball uniforms? I think they'd been consigned to the JV team the first two years I was in Artesia, then disappeared.
They should be in a museum somewhere, given the tales I heard about how much the varsity players hated wearing them.
I do have color photos of the Bulldog varsity playing in the Artesia Invitational around 1979 or 1980. They're wearing those Astros-like unis with the horizontal stripes. Lots of Bad Hair in those days, too.

My worse mistake as a Coach was to design the Astro style Jersey's. Still have my son tell me how ugly they were.
