Worried it may be a tough start of the season. I’m guessing Onate won’t be in the top 15 in 6A, and we looked like equals today. I guess it’s not how you start the season…… it’s how you finish it that matters. Surely we just got off to a slow start!!

typical scrimmage saw some good and saw some bad. I do think we keep it somewhat vanilla out there & don't show too much to start the season. We got a good staff and a decent amount of experience coming back, they will get coached up all season long and keep improving. Looking forward to Week 1 and setting up the game thread for next week.

Yikes! Randall, we're not even halfway through August yet and you're already talking about setting up a game thread?
Oh, the humanity . . .

I am with Agent Orange, I saw some good and bad but that is to be expected. I thought the Defense looked good overall. They gave up a few big plays but two of those catches were covered and the receiver made great plays. Offense got better through the day. We also played two QB with the first team. Once they pick the guy and he gets the majority of the reps that will get better. I am excited for the season and it’s going to be a great one!

Especially the big pass plays we gave up. Coverage was pretty good, just good plays. My concerns were inability to run the football and obviously snaps. If I remember right, snaps was a problem last year as well. This a detail I wouldn’t expect to struggle with.

..........I do think we keep it somewhat vanilla out there & don't show too much to start the season........... I talked to a Bulldog parent yesterday morning.....parent of a senior......and he told me the exact same thing! Said there were prying eyes from Roswell High and Goddard in the stands.

We play 7 or 8 games before we play the Roswell teams. And let’s be honest, our rivals know us nearly as good as we know ourselves. Example: I just happened to be watching our first 7on7 game against Roswell this year (@ NMMI) on the same sideline they came to for game time. I was almost bothered at how MUCH Coach Lynn knew about our passing game, while coaching the defensive backs on in-game adjustments. Of course it Makes since not to show a lot for Carlsbad because they have a new HC (although last years DC is still on the coaching staff)- so they’ll be prepared too.
Again don’t get me wrong, I think we’ll eventually be OK - our coaching staff is excellent, and as a big fan I couldn’t ask for a better group. With lots of varsity experience coming back, I just kind of expected to see it sooner rather than later. I thought we’d be able to run the football against a average to below average team that usually used 6 defenders committed to the pass. (Cavemen defense will definitely be even more formidable)! And the bad snaps were a little disheartening. Also Is a true QB rotation going into the season common? I ask because- As some of you remember from last year….. I’m a believer that our QB’s are often if not always (due to the knowledge they have of the game and athletic ability) could be very beneficial to our team elsewhere. I was a huge proponent of Deans playing LB last year instead of watching 90% of the game from the sidelines. This year with rotating QB’s, they each touch the field 25% of the game. Most HS teams don’t have the talent depth to be able to afford such little contribution from what I would guess are two top athletes. But hopefully we do 🤷♂️ Regardless I have full confidence the coaching staff will have it all figured out when we get in the games that matter most. Good luck on Friday Bulldogs. The last thing I want to hear is Carlsbad bragging about 5 in a row 😂

It doesn't matter if they were there. They will have HUDL tape and have a years worth of offenses and defenses to study from last year.

That is true, not many unknowns in this day and age, technology changed that. I think if anything just keep a few things in back pocket for game 1 but after that, won't matter. I thought there was 1 play we could have ran more of and milked it, didn't see it much but I think we will on Friday, doesn't make sense to use in a scrimmage either work on the other stuff but I'm sure most will know what it is.
