I read about the Bulldog dogpile tradition and saw quite some videos about that. To be honest, I love them but not sure, how they actually do these piles Do they do them spontaneously or do they agree before who are the ones on the bottom of the pile? How do the guys manage not to get hurt in these dogpiles especially when at the bottom? Is it hard to be down there or does it look worse than it actually is? Cheers Tob

This is the dogpile from my last game at the bowll, playoffs vs Bloomfield (November 1987)I’m not for certain, but presenly the dogs kind of make the pile how they please. We followed the coaches instruction as you can see the difference. My sophomore year I was stuck in the middle, right above the lineman. Junior and Senior year the starters were at the end or on top (backs, receivers, secondary (pecking order type deal). Nobody ever got hurt or complained. Jumping on the dogpile is a great memory.

I love seeing that dogpile noondog, no ropes to keep the kids and fans back either, I might have been down there too It's like the ultimate team/fan celebration. I said this before on here but one thing I found out didn't really know it at the time I'm claustrophobic, I freaked out being on the bottom in the middle, I laid flat on my stomach too that was bad, got really pushed into the ground. If your on the bottom in the middle it's best to get into the fetal position, After that I just got on the edge from then on and curled up lol.

I say never get rid of the dog pile! I've noticed, especially in the playoffs when playing teams we may not play as often, if they make the mistake of coming out of the locker room before us, every single one of their players will stop their warms ups and watch the dog pile. It seems to totally get in their head and psych them out. I love watching the other teams when we do it, to notice this. Really good teams will purposely wait and let us do it before coming out.
I always made sure I was the first one in the pile. I stood right behind the cheerleaders' sign or sometimes off to the side and took off as fast as my little legs could carry me, as soon as QB counted ATA to 3! Still gets me going I tell you what. Yeah you've got to get in a fetal position down there and hope for the best. Usually, I couldn't breathe at all and had cleats grinding into my legs/arms, but it was worth it. Nice adrenaline rush before a big game!

Which position did you play that time? Would you say that nowadays still the heavier guys are at the bottom or also the lightweight ones?

When you say that you always tried to be on the bottom, which position in the team did you play. sp were you lightweight compared to the others?

I read one time years ago that nationally the dog pile at Artesia HS was the number 2 entrance by a team. Number 1? The Yuma, AZ HS entrance. Check that one out on Youtube sometime. I dig the dogpile.

I dig the dogpile. You mean the guys that follow a police car with sirenes on on the field? Not sure what to think about that one and not sure whether this is good for the field neither

Following the police car on to the field isnt new, RR used to do it. Its been a few years and they wasnt doing it when I moved. Dont like it but I am as old school as you get, no on field celebrations, no noise during warm up etc. Thats why I dont watch as much pro ball as I used to, why celebrate a sack when your team is down 21 pts in the th quarter?

I like it because it intimidates the other team. I went to Clovis high and when Artesia went up there in 06' they had the visitor stands packed and brought the band and the dogs did the dog pile. The big bad wildcats were shook from the start. I never saw La Cueva, Goddard, or any team come close to have that presence on the road! Artesia is the only team that can turn road games into home game. It's awesome.
