Let me see GB for 1984: Robert Johnson Strong Guard/DT, Duane Lewis Center/DE, Anselmo Herrera Tight End/Sam LB, Robby Ballew QB/Safety, Tom Harvey MLB/4Back, Roy Gabaldon 2 Back/Will LB, Felix Boy Garcia 3Back/DE. That's 7. The only one that's even questionable was Roy as he had a broken bone in his hand and didn't always start on defense, but when he didn't start at Will it was Ernesto Navarette who also started at quick guard.
Let me think about '82 and '83 and get back to you. One thing you need to know is we ran a ton after practice and in the summers.

1982 a little hazy but the best I remember it was this as far as 2 way starters went: Eric McCaleb 3 back/strong Safety, Kevin Graham Receiver/cornerback, Phillip Baldwin Strong Guard/MLB, Chris Hernandez Sam LB/Quick Guard?, Jimmy Munoz halfback/Will LB, Jeff Mossman Tight End/Defensive End, Jeff Canfield Quick Tackle/Defensive End. Again that's 7. There may be mistakes though I know it's pretty close. Jef Butcher really needs to take a look at that.

1983 Was this or close to it. Taggart Guinan Strong Guard/DT, Jimmy Munoz Halfback/Will Backer, Shawn Smith Quarterback/Strong Safety, Robert Johnson Quick Guard/DT, Chris Hernandez 3 Back/MLB, Anselmo Herrera Sam LB/Tight End. That's 6. There were a lot of players on this team that started one way and went in but didn't start the other way. Such as Bill Brown Center, Joe Gomez DE, Marshall Smith SS, etc. Noticeably absent from this group is Jeff Sanders. He was one of the best defensive backs there was in that era because he could cover anyone, and I mean anyone. But at 5'7 145 lbs. he carried the ball about 30 times a game. He was pretty banged up all year.
I think what Rapid is trying to say is there were players in the 70's who only played defense or offense. As in never even practiced on the opposite side of the ball. He himself was an all-state defensive end. As fast as he was I couldn't tell you where he played on offense, except that he had an 80's number. There were kids that sorta belonged to the defensive coaches and they played defense and scout team defense and that was it. I'm talking scout teams made up of all state players. I'm told the practices were full contact and 1's on 1's. Fights happened, but no one was allowed to get hurt, and they rarely did. Tough kids.

I was pretty close on my memory then? I just missed it by one on the 84 team. I can't remember who I was counting as the 8th guy.

"Our kids played as well as they thought they would despite having two out to injuries," said defensive coordinator Patrick Ward. "In my 22 years of coaching in Texas, Artesia's quarterback is one of the best I've seen. We'll make some adjustments and bounce back against Clovis."
- quote from Alamogordo's defensive coordinator

I was pretty close on my memory then? I just missed it by one on the 84 team. I can't remember who I was counting as the 8th guy. You may be right GB, and the question for me is Wayne Vinson. I know he started at corner at times but I'm just not sure how often. All of this talk makes me regret missing the 1984 team honor. I love all of you guys. High school football and being a Bulldog were everything for me that it was supposed to be. Getting to be a part of you guys and call you teammates, Awesome! Forever being linked to those that came before us like Roy Lawson and those listed in the other groups, Fantastic! I've been asked a million times now that I'm a coach, "Hey in Artesia how many black guys or how many hispanic kids played with you?" My answer: "I don't know. We didn't care about crap like that. We were a band of brothers wearing black and orange. I'd bleed again for any of them."

Pitch,
I don't post much but we did miss you at the 84 get together. It was fun seeing and talking to the guys again. Some of them I have not seen since our 10 year reunion. I saw Roy G. a week later and asked him why he wasn't at everything and he said he didn't know about it. I gave him a pretty hard time. lol I could not have said it any better concerning the band of brothers. I really didn't realize how much I miss you guys until some of us were able to get together again and tell war stories. It was a blast sitting at IHOP just telling stories. Your list is correct on the two way starters just one question - didn't Jaime Anaya start both ways too? G/DT
