......and nobody is talking about the Lovington Wildcats? When was the last time we played Lovington that really mattered? They have been out of our classification for quite a while, but I remember not too long ago that the Artesia/Lovington game was one of the most anticipated games of the year......right up there with Goddard and Carlsbad. I remember a few things about this series.....the Urlacher years and that Lovington team that went undefeated and was damn near unstoppable, the 0-0 tie in the 1987 state championship game in Lovington (I was there), and for some strange reason I still remember the names of their top 2 running backs that year...Matt Alexander and Jerry Dodd...and the entire situation with their QB Eric Fitz who had sustained a LIFE THREATENING injury earlier in the season...collapsed on the field with a brain hemmorage or something like that after taking a huge hit and almost died, but Eric was on the Lovington sideline for the championship in a wheel chair and got a huge standing ovation from the Artesia crowd when he came onto the field with his Lovington team-mates. I remember nail biting wins and heart breaking losses. I'm looking forward to the game tomorrow night, even though it will likely be a blow-out. But teams tend to rise to the level of their competition, and I expect that it won't be too long, maybe 4-5 years, before Lovington is right up there with Goddard and Artesia challenging for the district title every year. Just interested in hearing if anybody else has any other memories of this series, and other thoughts on tomorrow night's game.

I remember all that as well, except I thought the Fitz kid collapsed while holding an extra point. Maybe that was another situation at another place.

I was scouting the game when Eric Fitz when down. He had just come off of the field, I glanced at the sideline and saw him collapse.. fortunatly, Don Rody saw him and began to administer 1st aid...I don't remember whether he had taken a big hit or not..(maybe that was why I was watching him),..
Playing Lovington was always fun, it was a heated rivalry. Speaking of hits, someone might be able to find Eric McCaleb's hit on the Lovington QB, I can't recall his name, in '81 or '82 because of the 'Land of No Pride' sign 'left' in the Lovington visitors locker room. (I remember we spliced a highlight film together, yes SPLICED 16mm film, to show before games).

I remember the Eric Fitts thing. That scared the dickens out of all the Bulldog football mommas.

Lovington schools enrollment grew more than another other school in New Mexico I've heard. Time to move up, it's been a long time coming I've heard too. They dominated 3A year after year pretty much.

Eric McCaleb demolished a Lovington slot back named Mike Jameson. Demolished may be a bit strong. Obliterated is more like it. It was on a counter trap. Not sure which season it was but it was in Lovington.

Lovington schools enrollment grew more than another other school in New Mexico I've heard. Yeah, Lovington is growing like CRAZY! According to city-data.com their population in 2012 was 11,275.....that's up 19% since 2000. The same site says that Artesia's population in 2012 was 11,365.....up only 6.3% since 2000. Here is the just some of the info on Lovington from city-data...... Population in 2012: 11,275 (100% urban, 0% rural). Population change since 2000: +19.0%And the same info for Artesia, from the same site...... Population in 2012: 11,365 (99% urban, 1% rural). Population change since 2000: +6.3%So Lovington has pretty much caught up with us over the past 14 years or so, less than 100 people difference in population according to city-data. I remember not too long ago, probably the last time Lovington was in our district that their population was only 7,000 or 8,000. If their population keeps increasing at the same rate they will move up to 6A before we do. Lea County as a whole is really taking off! I was in Hobbs day before yesterday and that place is also going nuts, the traffic was insane! They are building new hotels and restaurants everywhere! I passed a sign on my way into town that said population 43,000+. I wasn't sure I saw it correctly so I flipped around and went back to make sure. I couldn't verify it on city-data or anyplace else on the internet, so I'm not sure were they got 43,000 from.

If Hobbs's population is growing that much that fast, will a second high school ever be built? I remember hearing, back in the 1980s oil boom, that the population was nearing 80,000 and that a second high school was planned.
But then the basketball powers that be shot down that proposal. They couldn't allow the hoops talent to be split up.

From what my uncle has heard, Hobbs is planning another High school again. Of course we have also heard "The Powers" has already said no to that.

I am not a basketball fan, but nobody has done more for Hobbs sports...and Hobbs in general... than Ralph Tasker. He put Hobbs on the map NATIONALLY. But it will probably be named after some politician.

Yeah that would be a nice tribute for Tasker.

I am assuming that it will probably be a AAA...AAAA...or AAAAA school, and not a 6A school, right? Or MAYBE they split the enrollment between the 2 schools, thereby dropping Hobbs High School down into OUR classification? That would be interesting...Artesia, Goddard, Roswell, Lovington, and Hobbs...all in the same district. Guess we will just have to wait and see. Do you know if they have decided on a name yet? Where are they building it? Yeah I know, that's a lot of questions, lol.

I didn't think so. About half of Plains people are connected in some way to Hobbs and I had heard nothing.

What may have been mistaken for a new high school in Hobbs was new Hobbs Freshman High School open in 2011 out on East Sanger St.

If anything I heard Hobbs would likely build a private school?
Artesia has plans for a 9th Grade or Freshman Academy, it's already in the works.
