Archive Former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie will be introduced Thursday as New Mexico's coach.
School vice president of athletics Paul Krebs announced the appointment Wednesday. Davie, who is a college football analyst for ESPN, will become the school's 31st coach.
He replaces Mike Locksley, who was fired in late September after going 2-26 in two-plus seasons.
Davie was head coach at Notre Dame from 1997 to 2001 and defensive coordinator with the Fighting Irish from 1994 to 1996.
Davie also has been defensive coordinator at Texas A&M and Tulane.
Davie was 35-25 as head coach of the Irish, and took them to three bowl games, including the 2001 Fiesta Bowl.

A solid hire I think especially given the current state of the program. I like the guy, thought he was a decent commentator too for ESPN. Would have loved to seen someone like Mike Leach but this is a solid coach imo.

IMO it is continued mediocrity. The man hasn't coached in 10 years. He was 34 and 25 at Notre Dame. The HS kids won't know him, but I guess when the program is at the bottom of the barrel you gotta get someone. I was listening to sports 610 and the guys said it is about 50% that people who called in thought it is still not the right person. People wanted Mike Leach.

Well Davies did replace Lou Holtz at Notre Dame so at least he does not have that to deal with. Compared to Locksley he is Lou Holtz. Best of luck to the Lobos maybe he can bring them out of the cellar.

I like the hire, he has to be able to coach or he would have never been at ND. There are not any of the teams he had to play at ND on the Lobo schedule. If he has recruiting ties in Texas, he will do fine at UNM. I can't figure out why Locksley would keep going to Maryland and the DC area to recruit when Texas is right next door. Crazy IMO. Go Lobos!

Good hire but will need a good recruiting coordinator. Despite what he says about being close to the game by working at ESPN, are the high school seniiors going to know who he is after such a layoff. Recruiting is the came of the game. I give it a B-.

ANYONE is better than Locksley.....HELL I WOULD HAVE TO SAY I COULD HELP THE LOBOS OUT MORE THAN LOCKSLEY DID.....SHEESH

It's a great hire. It means we don't have to listen to him on espn anymore. Guy was terrible at that. I do honestly think hes a good coach. He was the DC of the wrecking Crew of Texas A&M fame. They were good. Back when A&M complained about going 9-2 with a boatload of 13-7 wins. Now if he could hire Tony Kornheiser, Mark May and throw in Bobby Valentne for good measure. He would be doing us a great service by taking them out of the booth. As long as Kornhieser wears a hat so we don't have to look at that hairdo. And Bobby Valentine, wow were those some bad days as a Ranger fan for yours truly. I loved it this year during the 1st round of the mlb-ALDS. Bobby was right in the middle of telling how bad of a slump Nellie was in and Cruz put it about 25 rows deep into the pickle section in left/center. And Bobby paused and then finished his story. I really hope he gets a managerial gig soon, just not with the Rangers.

Mr. Pitch I'm with you a 100%, those guys are just awful to listen to..... a good reason for the mute button. Almost as bad as Howard Cosell.... or Beano Cook....
As an alum and former player, I'd give this hire a B-. He no doubt has the highest profile of any UNM football hire ever. My contacts tell me he is saying all the right things, time will tell if he hires solid assistants and brings back Coach Paulson for strength and conditioning. Realistically the Lobos will never be more than 6-6 to an 8-4 type of team. Money does matter and you just cannot compete year in and year out with people with 3 to 10 times your recruiting budget. If anyone honestly thinks that any coach can go in there and do better than Rocky Long did with the same budget he had, think again! Not happening. Mediocre is what you get when you spend 20 or 30 bucks when the top boys are spending 75 bucks or more.....
Please please mikemoe, don't hate on this new coach for being mediocre!! Mediocre and competitive against most teams is a fantasy right now after you guys ran Long out of town.... I read several national columns that stated Locksley was the worst hire in Division I history. When you run off the winningest coach in history and the only one to ever win a bowl game, look what you got.....an embarassment!!! One that brought national attention to the program for embarassing incidents and turning mediocrity into a disaster.....
If any coach attains mediocrity there, then we should thank our lucky star. How do you win the Indy 500 in a F 150??? Not possible.... Just like UNM will never win until they spend like the TCU's, BYU's, Texas Tech's, etc.... of the world....
Now would i have like them to have really gone after Mike Leach??? You bet.... But from what I'm told he wasn't interested. Hummm, wonder why? My guess is he felt it would be impossible to win more than 6-7 games per year.... and if he did, he wouldn't be appreciated and be looked at as mediocre.... mediocre on a baloney budget with filet mignon expectations by some!!

Also RL is the loosingest coach in history, that is never mentioned by the fans. If your can still say he is the bes coach UNM ever had after looking at his overall record. bowl record, record against BCS schools, generally weak schedule and lack of recruiting success with NM players (Jones, Branch, Lewis, even Chris William wasnt good enough), dosent that show more how pitifull the other coaches were thatn how good he was? Also putting the Lobos on scholorship restrictions is a big deal. Of course nobody thinks he knew anything about it LOL! I give him the "teflon" nickname for a reason.

One more thing I forgot, are you relly pround of a home game win over Nevada, a 6-6 team with 0 victories over a teams that finished over .500. I dont even think 6 win teams should get bowl bids, rewarding mediocrity.

6-6 teams go to bowls every year.... should they?? Probably not.... Yes i am proud of that win. It wasn't the coach or players faults that they went to the bowl and won..... they went out and did their job...... Are you saying that when invited to bowls the coach and players should turn it down?
Yes, Long did have the most losses in school history... because he coached the most games and won the most too!!! Bashing on that logic makes no sesnse.... Neither does criticizing him for not landing Landry Jones, Branch, and Lewis..... Ask any of them and none of them wanted to go to UNM regardless.... when the big boys come calling, you go if offered... Did we miss slightly on Chris Williams?? Maybe... but i'm sure he'd tell you now that he went where he was supposed to.. seems to have worked out for him....The fact of the matter is every year Rocky won with 10-15 in state kids who contributed and weren't recruited by ANYONE.... I'd say that is a far greater recruiting success than missing out on 3-4 blue chippers... Jones and Branch were in fact 4 or 5 star recruits.... Something that Chris Williams was not...For every Chris Williams missed, he got 5-10 other NM kids involved that weren't even offered anywhere else.... remember the walkon program??
Please please answser this one question: If Long isn't the best coach in UNM history, who is??
Does that show how pitiful the others were compared to him?? Maybe.... Those of us in the know do know the real reasons he resigned.... I'm glad he is doing well where he is at right now and is happy... Something he no doubt wanted to do at UNM... but grew tired of lack of support....
Who is the best coach there ever? Other than Franchione, can one honestly say anyone else has even been mediocre other than long>>>> Mediocre with poor support, poor facilities, and overall mediocre program....
I do wish you'd bash Locksley like he deserves... first of all he wasn't even qualifed to coach at Rio Rancho high....He bullshitted his way into that job and fooled the fool of an AD who in turn should have been fired along with that coach!!

I would give the Davie hire a C-. I hope he does well at UNM, but after the way Krebs screwed up the last hire he needed to hit a home run this time around. And by home run I don't mean Leach or anybody in that category, I mean that he needed to make the best decision possible. He did not do that this time around.
He needed to show that he was committed to winning. COMMITTED...nothing more. So he goes out and finds a guy that has been out of coaching for 10 freakin' years!!!!! That shows real commitment right there! Actually, I think it shows complete incompetence on Kreb's part. Either that or he just plain doesn't care.
I wasn't expecting Leach, Meyer, or anybody on that level, but a guy who hasn't coached in a decade is just pure insanity especially when there were other choices available. What I do like about this hire is that he says he will recruit New Mexico. So that is a plus!

Hopefully he keeps his word about the NM kids... The key for him in my opinon is to have as many in state kids as possible walkon, ala the old Nebraska way. Then recruit the living daylights out of Texas..... grab a few Arizona, Colorado, and Oklahoma kids and go get after them. During Coach Fran's big year, UNM had between 40 to 50 scholarship kids on the team from Texas... Long's rosters were full of Texas kids.... Both Mikes, Sheppard and Locksley abandoned this theory for California kids mainly and also people scattered nationally. Both failed miserably too.

I loved it when Rocky and Fran both were able to reel in players from all over New Mexico; not just the usual ABQ guys. And when guys like Urlacher, McKamey, DonTrell Moore, Baskett, etc., succeeded so well in college, that spoke well for both staffs.
On the other hand, I've heard talk that Locksley's staff didn't even know where most NM high schools were, and they'd bring in those DC guys who were a terrible fit with the program. Just heard today that backup QB Taurean Austin just quit. He wasn't from DC, but he was also a reflection of those east-coast guys they had who didn't put in the effort but still got preferential treatment (at least I suspect that was the case) by the Locksley staff.

1Bulldogfan - learn the gmae? Whole family is ADs and football coaches, I will match my football knowledge with you anyday. TexasOil-It wasnt personal, you are a good guy I enjoy your post. Locksley's record speaks for itself but people are underestimating how much of a hole Teflon left for him, very little talent and scholorship reductions but RL dosent get criticized, especially by the soft media in Abq.
