No its not a Cleveland or RR thing, I just think it diminishes the regular season. Pick your team say Artesia has a 9-1 schedule and are seeded #1 and St Pius gets a #10 seed with a 6-4 record. Pius gets hot in the playoffs and wins 3 games but they get to stay home while Artesia has to travel to Albuq because the last game in 2005 was in Artesia. And everybody knows how hard a schedule Artesia plays. Did the coaches actually vote on this system? If they agreed with it no problem but if I was a head coach no way I would vote for that system even though it would possibly hurt my team. That's just it Mike, Artesia is not going to go 9-1 or undefeated often, on average we are probably going to lose at least 3 or 4 games, the level of competition we play is just too tough, Aztec has been undefeated in the regular season the last couple years, they would never have to play on the road then. Top 4 Seeds are guaranteed a bye and their opening playoff game at home regardless if they owe the other team. I think it's as fair as it can get.

I think it will all work itself out in the end, I tell you what if Cleveland can take state against Mayfield on their home field, it will make it just that much sweeter for the Storm I think.

I agree with Randall and from what I know, Artesia coaches have always liked the system because they get to play games in Bulldog Bowl on a regular basis. Playing in Bulldog Bowl is a huge advantage because of the perceived "mystique" and the extra incentive the tradition provides. I think Coach Henderson was asked one time if wanted to play on a neutral field rather than do a coin flip and he chose the coin flip because of this advantage. If you remember when he was in Ruidoso and played Lovington for the AAA state title they played on a neutral field in Roswell at the Wool Bowl, I think twice, I know once. That is the difference between a chance to play in Bulldog Bowl and Horton Stadium. I'd say that speaks volumes. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong on the above.

I know about the bye and the opening home game. In my scenario Artesia would be 11-1 traveling to Abq to play a 9-4 St Pius team. In this case I think fairness should take a back seat to the better team getting an advantage by playing a home game per their record.

It doesn't matter if we have to go play at a school that won their first round game and has a record of 4 -11. That's what the playoffs are all about.
By the way St. Pius came to Bulldog Bowl in 2000 as a huge underdog and beat us for the state title. So it goes both ways.
The system with who owes who is the best in New Mexico. I will also say that out of the 30 state title games we played in we have lost 3, all at home. Somebody may correct me if I'm wrong.

In 1954 we went to Albuquerque to play for our first State Title. We were favored but lost to Highland high school. They had a kid that ran all over us!! The name was Tommy McDonald and he was pretty good!! We went to Las Cruces To play for the title again in 1959 and got beat by Las Cruces High school.

Yes, Tommy McDonald did run all over the Bulldogs in that 1954 title game, and yes, he was VERY good! He was an All-American and a Maxwell Award winner at OU and during the 3 years that he started at OU the Sooners never lost a game. www.profootballhof.com/hof/member.aspx?PLAYER_ID=147He spent 12 years in the NFL, mainly with Philadelphia, made 6 Pro Bowls, and is currently in the NFL Hall Of Fame. He is also an AWESOME dude! This video is from just 2 years ago. He also gives a shout out to his home state at about the 2:10 mark......
