Big Dog...thanks for the info. I have been researching NM football all day. Of course that's easy when one is retired. I have found the NMAA (nmact.org), the nmhsca, and pecosvalleybroadcasting.com. I did find out that playoff selection and seeding is partly determined by the Maxpreps Freeman ratings. Also that the 4A/5A All-Star Game is next month during the coaching clinic. I found on Maxpreps that Hobbs will play Lubbock Coronado and that Carlsbad will play Americas and Eastwood of El Paso this year. In Texas, we have the Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine which tells us in June how many lettermen from offense and defense that each team has returning from the previous year.

Randall - I tried to get the Rams but are not a member of Maxpreps and only got a couple of games, 1 of them an El Paso team, forgot which one. Any help is appreciated. If you are talking about the Rio Rancho Rams, Maxpreps is showing 8/29 Valley @ home, 9/05 @ EP Americas, 9/19 Las Cruses @ home, and 10/10 Santa Fe @ home...that's it.

Catman what I read on here is "welcome to NM". I too lived in the Metroplex for about a year and moved to San Antonio thereafter for several years, 'til returning to NM. I had two sons who played football for John Marshall HS in SA. I wanted to move them to Artesia so they could play for the 'dogs but I got tired of arguing with their mom about moving to Artesia. Well welcome and stay tuned for Bulldog football. Artesia is a perennial power and has the most state championships in football in the state of NM. The 'dog I understand played a team from the metroplex area one year, I don't know the year but they beat that team. The have played Monahans, Seminole,Kermit, El Paso teams, I think albeit not sure an Odessa team at one. They have played other teams I can't remember but the 'dogs have held their own and have a history of beating Texas teams, with some losses of course but I think mostly wins. I can't wait 'til football, but meanwhile go SPURS !!!!!!

Artesia will play Texas teams now and then mostly El Paso teams and we will never play them in Texas, because of the blocking rules in Texas, so I've heard. It must be true because we haven't played over there in a long time.

We beat El Paso Riverside 40-35 in El Paso...that was the game that their stadium lights went out and they had trouble getting them back on. Ended up having to have an electrician come to the stadium and the game was delayed for over an hour. The very next year...2001...EP Riverside came to Artesia and we beat them in Bulldog Bowl 56-20. They destroyed the visitor's locker room after the game.

In 2000 huh, doesn't seem that long ago but that's been 14 years now.
Crispy you forget though we had El Paso Catherdal here in Artesia in 2011, I don't think we had much to chose from at the time and had to put a Texas team on the schedule

I remember seeing a very good game between Marshall and Taft at the Dub Farris Athletic Complex. That must have been 10-15 years ago. My favorite SA team was always the Madison Mavericks of the Northeast ISD. I loved to see the games where they put it to Judson. I can certainly see why your wife didn't want to move back to Artesia. There is quite a difference between shopping in SE NM and the large metropolitan areas of TX. lol We have been back in DFW since Saturday to attend a Grandson's graduation and stock up on certain things that we just can't find in Artesia-Carlsbad-Roswell. We are heading back to NM Saturday morning. All of our families are in DFW and our Mothers are both 90 and we need to see them every couple of months.

It must be true because we haven't played over there in a long time. Texas and Massachusetts play by NCAA rules which allow cut blocks. The rest of the states have adopted the National Federation of State High School Associations rule book.

Yeah, I originally posted that 2001 EP Riverside was the last time we played a Texas team "period". THEN...I went scanning through previous posts and read where somebody had mentioned EP Cathedral. I thought to myself...Crap, I KNEW that...I was at that game! Quickly edited that part out of my post but I guess you saw it before I edited it, lol.

When I was in South Texas we played several San Antonio schools. I don't remember ever losing to any but it was hard to get games with them because 1) the mind set of the administration in the metro San Antonio schools was that they didn't need to break the city limits to find games as that costs money, 2) they didn't need to suffer a loss to a smaller school district(and they would have lost). We generally had a game or two against a San Antonio opponent, but not always. The thing to remember about metroplex schools is that there are more kids playing football in Dallas-Ft. Worth than play in many other entire states. The same with the Houston area. The difference between DFW and Houston or San Antonio is parity. There are a ton of blessed athletic schools in DFW. It seems there are only a handful in Houston and the rest of them couldn't beat the flies off themselves. Don't let your mind stray to, let's say ethnic reasons either. Grab a team picture of the Argyle Eagles. You might be a little surprised.

I'm impressed with everyone's knowledge of TX football. Of course SE NM is close to TX, some of you are transplants like myself, some have lived and worked there, but we all share a love of the game wherever it is played. I once saw a game in Oregon between 6-man and 8-man teams. They played 6-man in the 1st half and 8-man in the 2nd. It was interesting for me because I had never seen 8-man played before. For me high school football is my favorite sport. I'll watch some college ball but have lost interest in pro ball for various reasons.

Glad to have you aboard Catman, retiring and leaving Arlington TX for Lakewood NM? what gives ha ha. Texas Oil said once why Southeastern NM is so strong in Football in the State of NM is the Texas influence, I tend to agree and your right a lot of transplants from that area, my grandparents lived in Texas before bringing the family to New Mexico, so a couple generations have grown and played football here with more to come. If your a fan of 6 man, about 10 miles north of Artesia is Lake Arthur, they are the reigning 6 man state champs, then another 10 miles north or Lake Arthur is a small town called Hagerman the reigning 1A State Champs, then about another 10 miles is Dexter they are a pretty good team themselves, lost in the semi-finals in 2A this year. So there is some good football played in the Pecos Valley, I always enjoy catching a game or two in these small towns, I just like the atmosphere and the game is still played on grass as most other schools have moved to turf. Again Welcome to the forum and to New Mexico.

Again Welcome to the forum and to New Mexico. I'll give you some personal history about myself. The wife and I retired from our jobs in 2007 and bought a motorhome. We took several out of state trips that year and decided we liked the RV lifestyle. In May 2008 we sold our house in Hurst, TX and have now spent the night in the RV in all 48 lower states and in Canada also. When we would come back home to DFW we would stay at an RV park in south Arlington to be close to our families. The wife's Mom has Alzheimer's and the cost of her care has been steadily rising. We have moved our motorhome to the SKP Ranch in Lakewood that got flooded and then evacuated last September in order to cut our expenses and better pay for her care. I lived a year in Big Spring when I was in the 6th grade, so I'm somewhat accustomed to the environment out here. I have not so fond memories of an ice storm there. We lived across from the high school and the only things moving on the street were tumbleweeds doing about 40mph. lol As I've gotten older I'm not as willing to sit out in bad weather to see games much. I remember seeing a semi-final game in Stephenville once between Stanton and Celina during a sleet storm. With games on the radio and even more on the internet I tend to stay home in comfort. I do want to see some games at all the towns you mentioned including Carlsbad and Roswell Goddard though.

Finally got full Rams schedule, tough one at home to start season Aug 29 v Valley. Even though Catman wrote about it above I was thinking that game was at Community stadium. Of interest to Dogs fans, the article said St Pius should make the playoffs because schedule "isnt very taxing". Two higher classification schools on schedule are Gallup and Rio Grande.

Bdogfan - don't know if you are old enough to remember but in L.G.'s first year at Artesia (1960) we played Lake Worth High School (located just outside of Fort Worth. They came to Artesia and got their heads handed to them. Artesia scored over 50 points on them if I am not mistaken.

I was 8 years old in 1960, I don't remember that game I have read where the 'dogs demolished a Ft Worth area team, may have been Lake Worth.
