Hey guys Sooner fan here. Looks like OU may be opening up on the road at UTEP. Might make a nice roady to see your boy. nothing confirmed yet but it looks like it That would be awesome, only time I got to see him play in person was at the Sun Bowl. Was planning on going to OU & Texas this year but plans fell through after a death in the family. Keep us posted, I would love to go and take my boy to see em play. I believe the Sooners go to Lubbock again next season too, is it me or does red raiders and sooner ticket prices seem high? seemed like it last time they were in Lubbock.

I just saw the same rumor on two OU boards as well.
It's not a bad drive for me, down I-25, but you guys are closer. Whis is the preferred route to El Paso from Artesia - is it U.S. 82 to Alamogordo then south on 54; or is it 285 to Carlsbad and then 62/180 past the national park and the salt flats?

I always go through Carlsbad. Never went the other route so I'm not sure which is best but I think most others go through Carlsbad as well

Randall! How can you have never gone through Alamo?! Just the fact that it's through the mountains makes the crappy drive worth it.

Randall! How can you have never gone through Alamo?! Just the fact that it's through the mountains makes the crappy drive worth it. lol I don't know man, I don't go to El Paso often but I always go through Carlsbad when I do. If I go to this game, I'll try the alamo route Lot of open highway the carlsbad route, so you can haul butt, I did get pulled over one time in the Guadalupe National Park Area, was going 80 and the speed limit is 55 through their I believe. Quickest stop I ever had, it was pitch dark out, cop said sir you do realize the speed limit is 55 through the park area? I didn't lie I said yes sir, he said ok slow it down and go on your way. I couldn't believe it.

Pretty sure I would have gotten a ticket if I said that I bet he see's that a lot cause the speed limit is like 70 and then just all the sudden it's 55 for a little ways through the park area, easy to miss if your not paying attention.

Looks like it's now official: OU at UTEP to start the season:
(OU Sports Information)
The University of Oklahoma announced its three-game 2012 non-conference football schedule today, one day after the Big 12 released its 2012 nine-game conference schedule for the Sooners. Oklahoma announced non-conference games against the University of Texas at El Paso, Florida A&M and Notre Dame.
“We have a philosophy of playing a challenging schedule on a yearly basis that puts our team in the best possible situation to make a run at a championship,” said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops. “I know that Joe Castiglione puts our program’s best interests at the forefront when scheduling our opponents and it shows with the quality of teams on our schedule. We look forward to another challenging year and hope our fans reflect the excitement we have for this year’s schedule.”
The Sooners will open the 2012 season on Sept. 1 in El Paso, Texas versus UTEP in OU’s first ever regular-season trip to the city. OU is 2-0 against the Miners with both wins in Norman under Bob Stoops in 2002 (58-0) and 2000 (55-14). Oklahoma has played three times in the Sun Bowl in El Paso with the last visit coming in 2009, a 31-27 win over Stanford.
Oklahoma will open its 2012 home slate on Sept. 8 versus Florida A&M in the first ever meeting between the two schools.
After four Big 12 Conference games, OU plays host to its third and final non-conference foe as it welcomes Notre Dame to Norman for the first time since 1966 on Oct. 27. The two historic programs have faced each other nine times with the Fighting Irish owning a 8-1 series lead. The last meeting between the two teams came on Oct. 2, 1999, a game Notre Dame won 34-30 in South Bend, Ind. The two have played a total of four times in Norman with Notre Dame capturing all four games, the last a 38-0 win on Oct. 22, 1966.
Oklahoma opens up spring practice on Monday, March 5 with its annual Spring Game slated for Saturday, April 14. Tickets for the event are on sale and are priced at just $5 each through April 10 before going up to $10 after that. Some folks on OU boards are already asking about lodging in the El Paso area. I've only stayed in Cruces and Alamogordo (which is still a good 83 miles away), so I don't know what's closer to the Sun Bowl than the hotels near NMSU.

New story from spring practice (Daily Oklahoman, OKC): newsok.com/ou-football-landry-jones-still-has-plenty-to-accomplish/article/3655258OU FOOTBALL: Landry Jones still has plenty to accomplish Sooners quarterback returns to spring practice looking for another shot to fulfill his goals. By Travis Haney, Staff Writer, thaney@opubco.com Published: March 6, 2012 NORMAN — The letter came with the result Landry Jones was expecting. It came with the best result imaginable, one he had dreamed about since he was a boy. The Oklahoma quarterback in January received a first-round projection from the NFL's Draft Advisory Board. By then, despite the millions of dollars that go along with that news, Jones had already determined he was not done at OU. He wanted another season, another chance to fulfill the goals he had set when he left Artesia, N.M., five years ago. “I knew what I wanted to do,” said Jones, who made the decision to return for his senior season about 10 days earlier than he indicated he would. “I prayed about it, felt good about it. There are some things I want to accomplish, some goals. I just wanted to be back, really enjoy my senior year, my teammates, this team and being a Sooner for one more year.” That year now begins in earnest, with Jones' fifth round of spring ball. So, what exactly is left for Jones, already the school's all-time leading passer, who will likely become OU's winningest quarterback this fall? He said, as you would expect, that competing for a national title is requisite. But he did not shy from publicly establishing a couple of personal goals: being an All-American and a Heisman finalist. “I'm lucky enough to be at a place like Oklahoma,” Jones said, “where I have a lot of good guys around me that I'm capable of making those things come true, maybe.” OU coach Bob Stoops said he would like to see Jones be more precise “in everything that we're doing.” But that charge isn't solely made in Jones' direction; it's more of an offense-wide challenge. Still, when you have an experienced quarterback, he is expected to be the leader of that initiative. And it is rare to have someone who has taken as many college snaps as Jones. He was thrust into duty as a freshman because of Sam Bradford's shoulder injury, and he never relinquished the spot. Jones has thrown 1,628 passes as a Sooner, completing 1,021 for 12,379 yards. He has thrown 93 touchdowns. “I believe it's a great advantage, just the leadership, the poise, being able to hopefully avoid the really poor plays that put you in bad positions, with turnovers,” Stoops said. “Hopefully there's increased precision and execution. That's what you usually get with a more mature and experienced quarterback.” Jones sees specific areas where he needs to grow — making the spring important, even if he has practiced and played as much as he has. He said he can always make sharper decisions, better understand the offense — and become more mobile. That last issue has always been a hot button with Jones, who doesn't exactly admit to being nimble. But he's working on it. Jones said he has been involved in mobility drills. “It comes with practice,” he said. “(Quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel) is doing a good job putting us through some stuff.” Lineman Gabe Ikard said the team appreciated Jones' decision to spurn the NFL dollars and return to school. “We're excited to have him back,” Ikard said. “He's as vocal as he's ever been. He's doing all the right things. He's being Landry. He's the leader of the team. We all know that. I'm very, very thankful to have him back.” While that's the team's take, a faction of fans groaned when Jones announced he was coming back. Ikard, for one, noticed — and wondered why. “How can you be mad that he's coming back?” Ikard said. The theories — complaints, really — are fairly standard: He isn't Bradford. Fans clamor for change, typically. He doesn't run enough. He doesn't yell enough. “You've got the best quarterback in the country coming back on your team,” Ikard said. “All you keep hearing is fans and people complaining. You're like, ‘Stop.'” Well, what would stop it? More wins? More yards? Or a ring like the one his quarterbacks coach has? All of the above? That's why he turned down the first round, really. “It speaks to what he wants to accomplish,” Heupel said. “He wants to push himself in the top tier.” Read more: newsok.com/ou-football-landry-jones-still-has-plenty-to-accomplish/article/3655258#ixzz1oPNbL1AB

How does the Advisory Board evaluate players, is it like the NFL combine? Why did they evaluate Landry if he is returning to OU? Seems like they would have waited 'till next year. And finally, what weight does the evaluation carry? What does the evaluation mean? I thought that draft rank was determined on draft day by the needs of the teams involved in the draft.

Sounds like they did the evaluation way in advance of his announcement, big deal.
A lot of people are pushing Matt Barkley from USC as the best QB in the nation this year, we'll see how it shakes out. OU is wishy washy and hopefully they can get in and stay in a groove throughout the season.

I think there is some "advisory board" run by the NFL, before the deadline to "announce" is - so kids really know about where they stand. I think it might be in response to all of those stupid kids who declared for the NBA 10 or so years ago that weren't even considered D-1 prospects.
And in other news, the future Mrs. Landry and her Sooner teammates won their NCAA tournament opener tonight over Michigan, 88-67. If we win Tuesday, it's back to the Sweet 16 for the fifth straight season.

I watched Whitney Hand play yesterday for the first time. I'm very impressed. Hope the Sooners can make it all the way this year.

Unfortunately, it all ended for the season last night. But, she's surrounded by a great group of freshmen and sophomores (and only one senior and one other junior). So she and OU should have a really good year when Whitney's a senior next fall.
